The article compares the advantages and disadvantages of the main available technologies and present IEA data on their diffusion at international level.

Biomethane upgrading allows biogas to be more efficiently used with respect to direct onsite utilization for electric power generation in small and medium sized plant. Biomethane can be also marketed as automotive fuel thus increasing flexibility and providing environmental benefits as avoided emissions from fossil fuels.

The estimate of Italian biomethane production potential is around 4 billion Sm3 per year. The corresponding substitution of natural gas with this amount of biomethane would prevent the emission of 8 Mt/year of CO2, equal to about 2,5% of the overall national emissions.

There are no truly dominant upgrading technologies and the most suitable solutions have to be chosen on a case by case basis depending on the biogas features and biomethane requirements, and obviously also on the plant size. The article compares the advantages and disadvantages of the main available technologies and present IEA data on their diffusion at international level.
