The aim of this work is to evaluate the economic viability, for domestic end-users, of the installation of an electrical energy storage system coupled with a PV plant, taking into account the incentive scheme Quinto Conto Energia, the economic contribution given by Regione Lombardia and fiscal deductions.

The aim of this work is to evaluate the economic viability, for domestic end-users, of the installation of an electrical energy storage system coupled with a photovoltaic plant. Calculations have been performed keeping into account the feed-in-tariffs incentive scheme Quinto Conto Energia, the economic contribution given by Regione Lombardia and the 50% fiscal deductions. In order to do that, using real profiles of electricity consumption for different types of users, the operation of a PV plant coupled with different electrochemical storage technologies have been simulated.

Through the simulations’ outputs the investment Pay Back Time (PBT) was calculated, evaluating the difference between incomes and costs, before and after the storage system’s introduction. The best results are achieved by high-consumption users and Lithium-ion batteries, with a PBT around 8 years, sensibly lower than the batteries lifetime which has been estimated in over 20 years.

In case of Lead-acid batteries the achievable PBT can be even lower, due to the lower specific purchase cost [€/kWh], but the batteries’ lifetime is also reduced (around 8 years).
